Abstract :
[en] The European construction sector faces growing pressure to reduce the consumption of natural resources, waste production, and CO₂ emissions. Concrete production contributes significantly to these impacts, notably due to the demand for natural aggregates and sand. A promising pathway towards circularity is to recycle concrete waste into recycled aggregates and use them in repair materials for ageing infrastructure. However, recycled fine fractions generally contain adherent cement paste, leading to higher porosity and increased water demand. This creates a challenge in balancing workability with the reduction of the water-to-binder ratio required to ensure high mechanical performance and durability, making mixture design particularly delicate for high-performance self-compacting repair mortars. This work aims to progressively develop high-performance self-compacting repair mortars incorporating recycled sands and fines, based on a Design of Experiments (DoE) methodology. In a first phase, a preliminary characterisation of recycled fines was carried out (particle size distribution, density, absorption, and paste-related indicators). In parallel, a first DoE-based experimental matrix, developed from the literature and built using JMP software, was conducted on formulations made exclusively with natural materials across three cement types, in order to identify the key variables (mix composition, admixtures, water) influencing fresh-state properties and mechanical performance. Analysis of the results allowed the identification of significant factors and interactions, leading to three optimised formulations, one per cement type, serving as reference compositions. These formulations will form the basis of a forthcoming second DoE, in which natural materials will be fully or partially replaced by the characterised recycled fractions. The contribution will present the DoE strategy, the results of the first optimisation phase on natural materials, and the planned approach for the incorporation of recycled materials.
