Abstract :
[en] This doctoral research examines the effect of living place on green consumption behavior, particularly among Algerian consumers living in Algeria and Belgian of Algerian origin living in Belgium. It starts from the observation that green consumption is often studied through isolated variables, without sufficient attention to the place context in which such behaviors are shaped.
The thesis proposes that living place should not be viewed as a simple geographical setting, but as a multidimensional construct integrating material, symbolic, and behavioral dimensions. It also introduces the concept of Green Consumer Orientation as a holistic variable, located upstream of attitudes and intentions, in order to better explain the transition from favorable dispositions to actual behavior.
The methodology relies on a mixed approach combining literature review, qualitative exploration, and quantitative validation, completed by a comparative cross-country study. This makes it possible to identify, develop, and validate the main constructs of the model, and then compare their structures and trends between Algeria and Belgium. The results show that green orientation is organized around three dimensions: Identification, Equilibrium, and Interaction. They also reveal that green consumption depends on cognitive, social, and contextual factors, as well as constraints related to accessibility, trust, and price.
The comparative study highlights differences in behavioral expression according to the living place. In Algeria, behaviors appear more marked by uncertainty and skepticism in regards to green labels, whereas in Belgium they are more stabilized due to a more mature market. This research therefore shows that green consumption cannot be understood without considering the social context in which it takes place.
Overall, this thesis contributes to the literature on green consumption by proposing an integrative conceptual framework linking living place, green orientation, attitude, and behavioral intentions. It shows that sustainable consumption practices are deeply situated and that their analysis requires a contextual, comparative, and multidimensional perspective.
