Abstract :
[en] Fabric of the calc-alkaline, high-K Gamaye granitic pluton which crops out in the Paleoproterozoic Kédougou-Kéniéba inlier (southern West African craton) has been investigated by means of the anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility technique. Thermomagnetic curves and low values of the bulk magnetic susceptibility (≤0.5 × 10−3SI) reveal a paramagnetic signature, with biotite as the main magnetic carrier according to the granite petrography. A strain gradient is highlighted by field observations and a microstructural analysis, from an almost unmodified magmatic fabric in the north-east of the pluton to a mylonitic fabric in the south-west. Mylonitization occurred in the ca. N-S-striking, sinistral strike-slip Fekola shear zone, a high-strain zone which hosts a world-class gold mineralization, the Fekola deposit and is related to a late-Eburnean transpressional tectonic event, referred to as D2. Magnetic foliations in the Gamaye pluton define a zone axis, parallel to a gently-plunging mean lineation and also concordant with the D2 folding direction recorded in the host-rocks of the granite. A model of syn-D2 emplacement and deformation of the Gamaye pluton in a partitioned transpressional system is proposed, with a synmagmatic, contraction-dominated deformation away from the Fekola shear zone and shearing along this high-strain zone down to lower temperature conditions. This model highlights the importance of regional strain partitioning in shaping parts of the southern West African craton during the late-Eburnean, transpressional evolution of this crustal domain.
