[en] This poster shows how the integration of groundwater vulnerability into land-use planning could influence urban development trajectories in the Walloon Region (Belgium) by 2050.
The main objective of this research is to couple two currently independent approaches - (1) urban growth modelling and (2) groundwater vulnerability assessment - in order to integrate groundwater vulnerability as a spatial constraint on urban development. Two baseline scenarios are considered, both derived from historical housing demand trends observed between 1990 and 2020. The “Business as Usual” scenario assumes a gradual slowdown in urban expansion due to land-use policies and land saturation, whereas the “Growth as Usual” scenario assumes unconstrained urban growth at the constant rate observed between 2010 and 2020.
