Abstract :
[en] This contribution aims to explore the rhythmic possibilities of Valery Larbaud’s (1881-1957) verse, focusing on freedom as a linguistic and expressive style. Larbaud’s relationship with tradition is, on the one hand, ironic and desacralizing, and, on the other, nostalgic and creative: he adopts a certain norm to mock it, exposing its suffocating nature as a constraint, yet he subverts it with discretion, without deforming it. The analysis focuses on the tension between innovation and resistance to innovation in selected verses from Poésies by A. O. Barnabooth (1913), with the goal of identifying traces of an ironic ‘guarded freedom’ (Fortini, 1972). It is argued that in these instances of negligent ‘metrical allusion’ (Fortini, 1958) lies the modernity of Larbaud’s verse.
