Abstract :
[en] Prof. Dr. Pirard is full professor of Mineral Resources at the Department of Urban and Environmental Engineering of the University of Liège. He is the academic coordinator of the European Master in Resources Engineering (EMerald). He is an expert in resource characterization and he circular economy of minerals and metals. His research group is active in developing artificial intelligence and low energy technologies for extracting metals out of complex ores and end-of-life products. In this introduction we will address when and to what extent innovation is likely to affect demand and to what degree recycling is able to impact/reduce demand. Additionally, we will look into different options and trade-offs to meet future metal demand and achieve a more circular economy.
