[en] This article sheds light on the extensive use of allusions to entertainment culture in the iconic poetry collection Bezette Stad (1921) by Flemish avant-garde poet Paul van Ostaijen. The argument is that the mainly positive references to film, music-hall and popular music are to a large extent motivated by the younger generation's resistance to official attempts to impose a society characterized by discipline and renunciation in early 20th-century European societies.
