The book essentially consists of the French translation of the poem (from p. 15 to p. 50). The last pages provide the original English text, first published in The Roman Quarry and Other Sequences, eds Harmann Grisewood and René Hague, Agenda editions, 1988. What can be found here is the introduction not only to the translation but to the complexities of the text.

Abstract :
[en] The poetic sequence called 'The book of Balaam's Ass' was only published after David Jones's death. It is indeed riddled with contradictions and inconsistencies, but of the kind that can hardly be overcome. In a nutshell it is about the loss of grace, both in the later stage of the Great War (from the Somme offensive onwards) and in a postwar world in which the author feels all sense of the numinous has been erased.
