[en] This King Baudouin Foundation commissioned publication is the updated and completed version of a previous publication issued in January 2006 on the subject of imam training in Belgium and Europe.
This time document offers a comprehensive, updated overview of Islam and imam status in seven EU countries, namely Belgium, France, Germany, Netherlands, England, Sweden and Austria, set in the broader context of the state-church relation and the modalities of funding in each of the target country.
Whereas imams are believed to wield considerable influence within their community, the question of official certification of their training is raised less often. Whether the state should stay away from this issue or not, or whether there is a need for imams practicing in Europe to be trained in Europe, are important issues which deserve closer attention.
