This article attempts to draw up a balance sheet of the steel industry in Liege at the end of 1981.
It first describes the factories in Liege: their origin, their evolution since 1945 and their site and condition.
It then tries to define the difficulties and handicaps faced by Cockerill S.A. in the present crisis : a limited home market, international competition, the depreciation and scattered locations of the installations, the financial and managerial problems, the cost of salaries and wages and the social climate.
It finally deals with the financial, technical and social changes in progress in order to make it understood how important the changes are for the future of the company and the region.
