Abstract :
[en] The Kédougou-Kéniéba inlier (KKI) in the southern West African craton hosts several world-class orogenic gold deposits whose genetic relationships with Eburnean magmatism and deformation remain incompletely constrained. This study investigates the Gamaye pluton, a late-Eburnean granitoid emplaced in the KKI, ca. 2 km east of the Fekola gold deposit which is hosted by the ca. N-S-striking, sinistral strike-slip Fekola shear zone (FSZ). The latter is a possible segment of the regional Senegal-Mali shear zone (SMSZ) and both structures were (re)activated during a late-Eburnean transpressional tectonic event (D2). A multidisciplinary approach combining anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility measurements, thermomagnetic analyses, field and microstructural observations, geochronology (U-Pb apatite dating), whole-rock geochemistry and petrographic investigation of associated pegmatite dykes was applied to the Gamaye pluton, complemented by Re-Os dating of pyrite from the Fekola gold deposit. The Gamaye pluton is a biotite granite, comprising a main leucocratic facies and a subordinate mesocratic facies. It has a high-K, peraluminous geochemical signature and its two facies represent probably cogenetic magmatic pulses. Its paramagnetic behavior is demonstrated by low magnetic susceptibility values and results of the thermomagnetic analysis. Field observations and microstructures reveal a strain gradient in the pluton, from a relatively well-preserved magmatic fabric in the northeast to a mylonitic fabric near the southwestern margin, in the southern prolongation of the FSZ. Magnetic foliations define a zone axis, parallel to a gently-plunging mean lineation and also concordant with the D2 folding direction recorded in the pluton country-rocks. These relationships are consistent with syn-D2 emplacement and deformation of the Gamaye in a partitioned transpressional system, with synmagmatic, contraction-dominated deformation away from the FSZ and shearing along this high-strain down to lower temperature conditions. U-Pb dating of apatite yields an age of 2106 ± 55 Ma for the Gamaye pluton and Re-Os dating of pyrite from the Fekola gold deposit gives an age of 2211 ± 235 Ma. These geochronological data, because of their large uncertainties, prevent establishing a robust temporal relationship between emplacement of the Gamaye pluton and the Fekola gold mineralization. Nevertheless, the Re-Os results are consistent with a possible crustal contribution to the Fekola mineralizing system, while also allowing for the involvement of metamorphic and magmatic fluids. The pegmatite dykes that cut across the Gamaye pluton are interpreted as highly evolved residual melts left after differentiation of the granite. More evolved, Li-bearing components of this magmatic system are potentially present in the country rocks.
