Abstract :
[en] This paper discusses analytical challenges in the investigation of spatial markers with applicative uses, i.e. markers that introduce an additional, non-actor participant into the clause. Our previous study showed that such markers—previously observed only in individual languages (e.g. Harakmbut; Van linden 2022)—are widely attested and highly variable in their applicative uses (Mukhin et al. 2024). Drawing on an expanded 150-language sample, this paper addresses the difficulties involved in identifying applicative uses of spatial markers and distinguishing such uses from (spatial) non-applicative ones.
