Abstract :
[en] This paper investigates associated motion (AM) markers with applicative uses, i.e. which introduce an additional, non-actor participant to the clause. Applicative uses of AM markers have recently been observed in Pilagá, Nilotic and Tungusic languages (Vidal & Payne 2021: 451; Payne 2021: 718; Pakendorf & Stoynova 2021). Such markers are suggested to be uncommon (Guillaume & Koch 2021: 25; Pakendorf & Stoynova 2021: 858), but whether they are restricted to the languages in which they were originally observed and how they vary cross-linguistically has never been systematically investigated. To address these questions, I compiled a convenience sample of languages whose markers display both AM uses and applicative ones, and studied their characteristics in a broader typological context.
