[en] Thanks to the study of archival record relating to the restorations of the
1950s, a long-forgotten chapter in the history of Ostia has come to light.
In January 1944, two bombs fell in the archaeological area: one on the
Decumanus Maximus in front of the Theater, causing minor damage, and
the other on the north-western corner of the Piazzale delle Corporazioni,
damaging some mosaics. War reporters following the German SS docu mented the explosions with a series of images for propaganda purposes
against the Allies. Guido Calza’s report and other documents also reveal
the presence of German positions within the excavations and the damage
caused to some buildings by the demolition of the nearby Ponte della Scafa
