[en] This presentation examined the relationship between urbanization and flood vulnerability in the Antananarivo agglomeration, Madagascar. It first introduced the demographic growth and peri-urban expansion of the city, highlighting the rapid increase of built-up areas and the transformation of land use. The presentation then focused on the occupation of flood-prone areas, including low-lying zones, swampy plains, riverbanks, and areas with poor drainage infrastructure.
It also discussed the socio-spatial factors that increase flood vulnerability, such as informal settlements, precarious housing, poverty, limited urban governance, and insufficient planning tools. By combining spatial, environmental, and socio-economic perspectives, the presentation aimed to provide a scientific background for understanding flood risk and urban resilience challenges in Antananarivo.
