Abstract :
[en] Background: Breeding African Bos indicus cattle is essential for tropical livestock systems, as it offers advantages in terms of resistance to harsh environmental conditions and productivity in constrained environments. Pubertal and postpartum anoestrus represent a major challenge for opti-mising their reproductive performance. Objective: This study explores the reproductive characteristics, the hormonal mechanisms of pubertal and post-partum anoestrus, as well as the risk factors and appropri-ate hormonal treatments adapted to Bos indicus in Africa. Method: The study was based on a literature review conducted using several international scientific databases, including PubMed, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and African Journals Online. Results: Female Bos indi-cus reaches puberty later (16-40 months) than Bos taurus, although their tolerance to thermal stress and nutritional adaptation are superior. Significant differences in hormonal mechanisms, including elevated AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone) and IGF-1 (Insulin-like Growth Factor 1) concentrations, influence follicular growth and gestation. Postpartum anoestrus is prolonged by nutritional factors, lactation pattern and seasonality, while strategies combining nutritional management, weaning and hormonal treatments improve cyclicity and pregnancy rates. Conclusion: Integrated management, including genetic selection, nutrition and hormonal treatments, could optimise the reproductive performance of Bos indicus, thereby contributing to the sustainability of tropical breeding systems.
