Abstract :
[en] Maize cultivation faces attacks from numerous pests such as the fall armyworm (FAW), which causes a significant reduction in yield in various production areas in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The management strategies applied by producers vary from place to place, depending on the resources available, the level of technical support, and the types of seeds used. The objective was to assess the agronomic and economic impacts of the FAW (Spodoptera frugiperda) on maize cultivation in these two peri-urban areas of Kinshasa. A survey was conducted in Kimwenza and N'djili Brasserie, two key corn-producing areas on the outskirts of Kinshasa. A combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches was adopted, including a documentary analysis to explore the topic in depth and field investigations (survey and direct observations). The results of this study indicate that the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) causes the decline in maize yields in Kinshasa. The average loss is 26-50% for N'djili Brasserie and 11-25% for Kimwenza. The share of total income from corn production is less than 25% for 39% of farmers in Kimwenza, while in N'djili Brasserie, 74% of farmers report that it is between 25% and 50%. The study showed that the FAW poses a major threat to corn production in Kinshasa, resulting in significant economic losses for producers. Current farming practices, such as the use of local seeds and the lack of fertilizer application, further exacerbate the vulnerability of crops. Added to this is the lack of access to training, land, and pesticides. It is recommended to raise awareness among producers about the risks associated with this pest, strengthen their training in appropriate technical itineraries, and encourage crop diversification by combining corn with other crops such as legumes.
