Abstract :
[en] Background / Objectives: Across Europe, there is an increasing demand for structured, competency-based surgical education in otorhinolaryngology (ENT). The University of Liège has developed a comprehensive blended-learning programme encompassing the three ENT subspecialties, designed to ensure residents acquire full procedural and practical competence by the end of their training. The project aligns with UEMS standards and aims to serve as a model for neighbouring universities. Methods: Implemented within the Master of Specialisation in ENT, the curriculum integrates e-learning, problem-based learning, and validated procedural simulation tools (synthetic, digital, virtual, and cadaveric). The programme includes three advanced subspecialty modules and an annual bootcamp for junior residents. Learning objectives and assessments follow the UEMS competency-based logbook. The initiative is supported by the University’s accredited Simulation Centre and Human Anatomy Laboratory. Results: Over five years, 109 participants from Belgium and abroad have attended the programme, and 12 residents have completed the full curriculum. Participant feedback highlights strong engagement and perceived educational benefit. Compared with conventional apprenticeship models, the structured, simulation-based format optimizes training efficiency, enhances confidence, reduces intraoperative learning time, and shows a favourable cost-benefit ratio through shared infrastructure and reproducible procedural exposure Conclusions: This integrated ENT curriculum provides a sustainable, high-value model for European surgical education. Future studies will evaluate its measurable impact on skill acquisition rate and patient care quality, further supporting its role in harmonizing surgical training across Europe.
