Abstract :
[en] Polyimides have recently received particular attention as reinforcements in polymer composites due to the significantly enhanced properties, such as dielectric, corona resistance, and thermal stability. More especially, several researchers have shown somewhat efficiency in the use of polyimide composites in various thermal, mechanical, electrical, and insulation applications. However, the dielectric characteristics or behavior and corona resistance as the lifetime of most polyimide composites are generally adversely affected by long-term exposure to certain environmental conditions. This has posed a major issue in the use of polyimide as polymer composites or nanocomposites in certain electrical applications. This brief review, therefore, focuses on and discusses the environmental effects on the electrical and insulation properties of polyimide composites for high-voltage applications. This will also serve as a tool in the discernment of environmental factors that influence the performance of polyimide polymer composites as well as the feasibility of mitigating such challenges.
