Abstract :
[en] Known in its native state, sulfur was once used in the manufacture of matches. Yet this chemical element goes far beyond that familiar image. In reality, it occupies a central place in modern industry. A true pillar of chemistry, it is essential for the production of strategic compounds, foremost among them sulfuric acid, one of the most widely manufactured products in the world. Although little known to the general public, sulfur is now at the heart of major economic and geopolitical issues. Tensions in the Middle East, a key region for its supply, are currently raising growing concerns about the stability of supply chains. A shortage of sulfur would have considerable consequences. It would directly affect fertilizer production, which is essential for global agriculture, as well as the manufacture of semiconductors, pigments, and certain metallurgical extraction processes. In other words, a large part of our industrial infrastructure relies, discreetly, on this element. This naturally raises important questions. How can such a simple atom exert such a decisive influence on the global economy? And above all, what would happen in the event of a shortage? These are the issues explored in this report.
