Abstract :
[en] The aim of this contribution is to explore the importance of immaterial musical heritage in two areas of Portugal, Mértola and Fundão, examining how this heritage serves as a vehicle for local development policies that evoke the identity and expertise of the inhabitants, with the additional goal of empowering tourism as a catalyst for the region's socio-economic growth. In particular, the analysis will focus on Mértola’s Cante alentejano, which was inscribed in 2014 on the UNESCO List of Immaterial Cultural Heritage, along with the significance of the Islamic festival that has been celebrated for over two decades. For Fundão, attention will be given to the cultural importance of constructing bombos, musical instruments characteristic of pastoral societies. Using qualitative participant observation, this study reflects on how musical heritage can be interpreted as a testament to local communities, who actively work to valorize and preserve its memory. Additionally, the research highlights the presence of collective action practices that operate in a transformative manner, rooted in tradition still impacting the present, including adjacent sectors such as tourism.
