Abstract :
[en] The severe floods occurred in July 2021 across a large part of Central Europe and within the Vesdre Valley (Wallonia / Belgium), clearly reminded us of the vulnerability of our territories while reconnecting us —in the span of one night — to the historical and environmental continuum in which we are deeply embedded.
Through the re-exploration of this event and the work carried out —over four years (2021 -2025)— by the interdisciplinary consortium STUDIO Paola Viganò—TEAM Vesdre-ULiège, this book questions the present and the past of a “valley at risk” to explore —more broadly— the future of our territories in the light of a new socio-ecological paradigm. Within a series of transcalar and interdisciplinary considerations, the Vesdre valley emerges as a planetary metaphor for an era of transition, investing the territorial project with an unprecedented and promising role.
Through this publication, the editors propose to a wide audience and in an accessible language, a sequence of unpublished documents (drawings, images, texts), collected and designed to reimagine the Vesdre valley up to 2050. Most of the documents have been produced by the editors in the frame of the Vesdre Strategic Plan, a research by design unprecedented project (both in terms of content and method) funded by the Walloon Region in 2022.
