Abstract :
[en] Archaeometry at the service of architectural history. Some examples from the early Middle Ages This study highlights the contribution of archaeometry to the analysis of Early Medieval architecture, whose remains are often fragmentary. Three emblematic sites were investigated. At Chevremont (Belgium), GPR surveys revealed previously unknown structures and enabled a reassessment of the layout of a fortified complex mentioned as early as 779. At Amay (Belgium), new radiocarbon dates significantly revise the chronology of the religious buildings, indicating the existence of a first church as early as the late 5th century. At Germigny-des-Pres (France), PXRF and LA-ICP-MS analyses of Carolingian mosaics demonstrate the diversity of glass recipes used and the probable involvement of multiple workshops, while the homogeneous composition of gilded and silvered tesserae suggests production specifically dedicated to the site. Together, these results underline the value of archaeometric approaches for reconstructing the appearance, chronology, and functioning of Carolingian architecture, revealing a period that was more sophisticated and visually rich than previously assumed.
