Tom Phillips; A Humument; intermédialité; cinéma; Orson Welles
Abstract :
[en] Drawing from both found text and the tradition of the artist’s book, Tom Phillips's A Humument (1966-2016) is a work unparalleled in the field of contemporary art. Reworking page by page a forgotten Victorian novel, Phillips's book, situated at the crossroads of literature and visual arts, constitutes an "inter-work" in the most literal sense of the term. It also carries numerous references to the history of painting (from Veronese to Pop Art) as well as the history of literature (from Homer to Beckett, via Mallarmé, etc.). The purpose of this article is to bring to light the traces that another art form, namely cinema, has left within the fabric of A Humument.
