Le funzioni del disegno nella bottega di Lambert Lombard

The hundreds of surviving drawings by Lambert Lombard provide a unique testimony to the functioning of a Renaissance workshop. They reveal a genuine laboratory of artistic creation, in which inventiones in fieri — sketches, graphic studies, and the conceptual development of motifs and compositions explored through sequential variations — are combined with the intensive exploitation of these inventiones. This process includes duplication techniques such as counterproofing and squaring-up; cutting, often through contour cut-outs, and collage; reuse and adaptation, frequently in the form of collages; the production of modelli for paintings, engravings, and stained-glass windows; as well as the creation of ricordi.
This paper outlines the aims and challenges of an ongoing research project at University of Liège entitled Forms of Disegno in Lambert Lombard. The project is funded by the FNRS for the period 2024–2026.
