Abstract :
[en] Henri Pirenne's work explores the evolution of capitalism from the Middle Ages to modern times. He challenges the notion that capitalism is a continuous development by arguing that distinct classes of capitalists emerge in different historical periods. Pirenne posits that at each stage of economic history, a breach occurs, leading to the rise of new capitalists who adapt to changing conditions. He also contests the established view that medieval economies lacked capitalist elements, citing evidence from Italian city-states like Venice and Florence. The book aims to provide a hypothesis on the social history of capitalism, appealing to scholars and students of economic history. © Vlerick Business School
