Abstract :
[fr] Imp4ct, la cellule investigation des étudiants en journalisme de l'ULiège, a reçu Joël Matriche et Louis Colart (Le Soir) pour leur livre-enquête sur le scandale du QatarGate. Soit la plus grande affaire de corruption et d'ingérence étrangère (Maroc, Qatar) ayant jamais frappé le Parlement européen. Alors que l'enquête judiciaire, qui a démarré à l'été 2022, est loin d'être bouclée, deux journalistes d'investigation ayant eu accès au dossier répressif publient un livre fouillé sur cette affaire d'envergure internationale et d'une importance politique majeure à quelques mois des élections européennes. En effet, deux eurodéputés belges sont accusés, l'une par la Sûreté de l'Etat, l'autre par le député européen italien (repenti) au centre de l'affaire, d'avoir participé activement à ces ingérences étrangères au coeur du processus parlementaire européen. De quoi débattre du fond factuel du dossier, de la lutte contre la corruption et les ingérences étrangères en Belgique, ainsi que des notions de vérité journalistique et de vérité judiciaire.
[en] Imp4ct, the investigative unit for journalism students at ULiège, hosted Joël Matriche and Louis Colart (Le Soir) for a discussion on their investigative book about the QatarGate scandal—the largest corruption and foreign interference case (involving Morocco and Qatar) ever to hit the European Parliament.
While the judicial investigation, which began in the summer of 2022, is far from concluded, these two investigative journalists, who have had access to the legal case file, have published a detailed book on this major international affair with significant political implications just months before the European elections.
Indeed, two Belgian Members of the European Parliament stand accused—one by the State Security Service, the other by an Italian MEP-turned-whistleblower at the center of the case—of actively participating in foreign interference within the European parliamentary process.
This discussion will explore the factual foundations of the case, the fight against corruption and foreign interference in Belgium, as well as the distinctions between journalistic truth and judicial truth.
