[en] Cell-autonomous immunity involves intracellular defense mechanisms that are passed down from single-cell ancestors. This form of immunity allows cells to
sense threats like pathogens (via PAMPs), damage (via DAMPs), and
environmental stress, triggering responses that adapt the cell to these
conditions. Under stress conditions, membrane-less organelles called stress
granules are formed. They sequester non-essential molecules and activate
cellular immunity pathways. They also play a role in translational control by
sequestering inactive polysomes after the phosphorylation of the translation
initiation factor eIF2α.
