[en] The analysis of some cases of reception of Symmachus in Sidonius Apollinaris’ Letters confirms
that, in Sidonius’ point of view, the definition of the idea of barbaries and ‘otherness’ is not linked to
ethnic criteria. While Symmachus represents himself as a central figure in the political context of his age by
showing his connections with the prominent figures of barbarian origin, Sidonius does not use the rhetorical
topoi concerning the literary representation of barbaries for the defenders of Romanity, but only for those
who want to destroy it.
