Symmachus; Christians; Pagans; Reception of Pliny the Younger
Abstract :
[en] The paper analyses Symm., epist. 1,64, a letter of recommendation for Clemens, a bishop of
Mauritania, addressed to Celsinus Titianus, Symmachus’ brother. The investigation on the text
enables to read the letter as evidence of the peaceful coexistence of pagans and Christians at the
end of the 4th century. Not only the characterisation of Clemens is fully positive; by echoing
Pliny, Symmachus represents the bishop as a defender of Romanity and of the values promoted
by the successors of Valentinian I.
