Abstract :
[en] Within less than one decade, the introduction of LSIMS-FAB, foreshadowed by the pioneering work of Benninghoven in the mass spectrometry of organic solids, has opened wide the application fields of mass spectrometry. This, in turn, has helped emerging fields like biosciences, environmental analysis, and liquid surface chemistry to develop by giving them a powerful analytical tool for reputed intractable samples. Further developments can be foreseen in organic cluster chemistry and fast-screening analytical methos. The ion production mechanism from condensed phases is likely to be better understood and thus will lead to a more rational approach to matrix selection as well as better control of the artifacts. The emission of multiply charged ions from a correct matrix and the development of dedicated matrices for MS/MS experiments are among immediate prospects.
