Abstract :
[en] The objective of this communication is to describe the importance of a university animal welfare committee in scientific research. Animal welfare is a major concern in the field of university research, where animals are often used for various scientific studies. To ensure that these research activities adhere to high ethical standards, many academic institutions have established committees dedicated to animal welfare. The primary mission of a university animal welfare committee is to ensure that all research activities involving animals are conducted ethically and responsibly. This involves thorough examination and approval of research protocols to ensure compliance with ethical and legal standards regarding animal treatment. These protocols often include details on housing, handling, feeding, and medical care of research animals. In addition to reviewing research protocols, the committee plays a crucial role in training and educating researchers and staff involved in animal research activities. This includes teaching best practices in animal handling and care, as well as raising awareness of the importance of animal welfare in scientific research. Another important responsibility of the committee is to continuously monitor and evaluate the living conditions of laboratory animals. This involves ensuring that facilities comply with established standards to guarantee the welfare and comfort of animals. The committee may conduct regular inspections of research facilities to verify that animals are housed in appropriate conditions and receive necessary care. In the event of concerns regarding animal treatment or compliance with research protocols, the committee is tasked with conducting investigations and taking corrective actions if necessary. This may include suspending or revising research projects, as well as making recommendations to improve animal welfare practices. Furthermore, the committee plays a significant role in raising awareness of the importance of animal welfare within the university community and the general public. It often organizes educational events and outreach programs to promote a better understanding of the issues related to the use of animals in research. In summary, a university animal welfare committee is an essential component of any academic research institution engaged in the use of animals for scientific purposes. By ensuring adherence to the highest ethical standards and promoting a culture of respect and compassion for animals, these committees contribute to ensuring that scientific research progresses in an ethical and responsible manner.
