[en] An illusion of distinctiveness forfaces is described that manifests asa positive association between perceived familiarity and perceived distinctiveness. This association seems partly rooted in intrinsic facial characteristics but is boosted by actual exposure to faces.Suchillusioncould impederesearch onfamiliar faceswhere distinctiveness is manipulated or controlled and researchers will need to find ways around it.
