Abstract :
[en] Ophthalmotomy depends upon 3 factors: a) production of aqueous humor, b) resistance to drainage of aqueous humor, c)blood pressure in the luminary veins. Most cases of hypertension are due to an increased resistance in (he drainage of aqueous humor. A rise in blood pressure in the episcleral veins only occurs in certain exceptional cases. It has not been shown (hat ocular hypertension can be caused exclusively by hypersecretion. On ihe other hand, however, a considerable number of cases of ocular hypotension can be attributed to a reduction in production of aqueous humor. This is the case in uveitis and acute ophthalmomalacia. Iridectomy and iridencleisis are followed by a temporary decrease of the formation of aqueous humor, but their main hypotensive action is due to a diminution in the resistance of the outflow. The hypotensive effect of retrociliary diathermy is caused exclusively by the permanent reduction in production of aqueous humor. © 1954 S. Karger AG, Basel.
