[en] In the field of corporate governance, literature on board dynamics has primarily investigated the relationship between the top management and the board of directors, failing to take into account the pivotal relationship between the two top leaders in an organization, namely the CEO and the Chairperson of the board. Despite this relationship playing a crucial role in several organizational processes, there has been limited knowledge to date on the key contributing factors to the success in this relationship. Through an extensive analysis of conceptual and empirical studies, this chapter explores the current dimensions of the CEO-Chair relationship comparing current theoretical approaches and building a comprehensive model on how the relationship impacts different organizational outcomes. We complement our conceptual development with insights from interviews with Chairs and CEOs. By doing so, we seek to further our understanding on leadership in organizations, strategic management, and board dynamics.
