Abstract :
[en] This paper investigates hypothetical manner constructions in Spanish, and proposes a four-way constructional typology of insubordinate como si clauses, i.e. clauses introduced by the conjunction como si but used without an accompanying main clause (cf. Evans 2007). The analysis shows that, while variation in TAM marking is rare (the past subjunctive is the most frequent form), we can add three more construction types to Brinton’s (2014) 'denial of an assumption' type, all of which undocumented so far: a 'nuanced agreement' type, in which the speaker questions some implications or expectations associated with the preceding discourse; a 'discursive elaboration or reformulation' type, serving to unreservedly compare the preceding discourse to a hypothetical situation (with or without adding new information to what has been said); and a 'scalar evaluation' type, which sets up a scale and puts a hypothetical situation at its extreme to express that, even if that extreme situation were the case, the speaker wouldn't mind or care.
