[en] Starting from a comparative analysis of the main Short Story theories (late 1800s and early 1900s), this paper aims at analyzing the main features of the Italian Short‑Story between Verismo and Modernism. First and foremost, a new periodization is proposed. Secondly, the author retraces the historical path of the modern Italian novella, highlighting its axiological, onomastic, «medial» and structural metamorphoses. Finally, the crucial role of Verga’s model is pointed out.
