Abstract :
[en] In the second half of the 1970s, Iran was shaken by protests against the Shah's regime. These intensified in 1978 and led to the fall of the ruler the following year. In the West, including in Belgium, this movement gained a certain amount of support because the Iranian regime's abuse of power scandalized part of civil society. But while solidarity movements with Latin American and Eastern European countries from the same period have been studied extensively, the Iranian Revolution remained underexposed. This article focuses on the solidarity movements with Iran that were active on the eve of the revolution. We assume that with a comparative approach we can better outline the specific characteristics of such a phenomenon. To this end, we draw on the literature on other cases of international solidarity from that time. In doing so, we want to bring to light the nuances in the profiles of the mobilised actors, in their ideological motivations and in the strategies they followed.
[nl] In de tweede helft van de jaren 1970 werd Iran opgeschrikt door protesten tegen het regime van de sjah. Deze verscherpten in 1978 en leidden het jaar daarop tot de val van de vorst. In het Westen, onder meer in België, wekte deze beweging een zekere mate van steun op, omdat het machtsmisbruik van het Iraanse regime een deel van het maatschappelijk middenveld schandaliseerde. Maar terwijl de solidariteitsbewegingen met Latijns-Amerikaanse en Oost-Europese landen uit dezelfde periode uitgebreid zijn bestudeerd, bleef de Iraanse Revolutie onderbelicht. Dit artikel focust op de solidariteitsverenigingen met Iran die actief waren aan de vooravond van de revolutie. We gaan ervan uit dat we met een comparatieve insteek de specifieke kenmerken van een dergelijk verschijnsel beter kunnen omschrijven. We baseren ons hiervoor op de literatuur over andere casussen van internationale solidariteit uit die tijd. Daarmee willen we de nuances in de profielen van de gemobiliseerde actoren, in hun ideologische beweegredenen en in de door hen gevolgde strategieën, aan het licht brengen.
[fr] Dans la seconde moitié des années 1970, l'Iran est secoué par des protestations contre le régime du chah. Celles-ci s'intensifient en 1978 et conduisent à la chute du souverain l'année suivante. En Occident, ce mouvement suscite un certain nombre de soutiens, les exactions du régime iranien scandalisant une partie de la société civile. La Belgique ne fait pas exception. Pourtant, alors que les mouvements de solidarité avec des pays d'Amérique latine et d'Europe de l'Est datant de la même époque ont été largement étudiés, la Révolution iranienne a été délaissée par ce pan de l'historiographie. Cet article s'intéresse à des associations de solidarité avec l'Iran actives à la veille de la Révolution. Partant du principe que les comparaisons permettent d'identifier plus finement les spécificités d'un tel phénomène, il s'appuie sur la littérature pourtant sur d'autres cas de solidarité internationale concomitants. Sont ainsi mises au jour les nuances dans les profils des acteurs mobilisés, dans leurs motivations idéologiques et dans les stratégies qu'ils adoptent.
