[en] The LASER is the result of very extensive studies which took place over several years: it appeared in 1960. Such a complex device could not have appeared by chance. With the transistor, it is a "child of quantum mechanics". It has undergone many changes for more than 50 years and its fields of application are numerous and varied. They cover fields as diverse as industry, metrology, surgery, various fields of medicine, heritage and culture, information processing, entertainment, protection techniques, etc.
