Abstract :
[en] The mix of perfumes which pervades the warmth of balls and theatres crystallizes the fears of the hygienists and the moralists of the second half of the 19th century as far as crowding and social mix are concerned. The mix of perfumes, which is perceived as unpleasant, even dangerous, generates, however, a poetics of olfactory composition which echoes the harmonies created by perfumers. Then how can perfume be conceived in the plural, both in its uses and in its representations?
