[en] Many people agree that Herodotus, in his conception of historiography, criticizes Homer and prefers other more reliable sources (for example, the Egyptian priests). However, the link between the historian and the Homeric poems seems more complicated. If we read the passage of Book II about Helen in Egypt with attention, many details show that Herodotus thinks Homer knew the truth, but changed it to create a narrative which was appropriate for epic poetry. That's why the historian tries to combine Homer's testimony with this of his other sources to find the truth hidden by the "epic lies".
