Abstract :
[en] For a little more than three decades, south-eastern Niger and more particularly the Departments of Gouré, Goudoumaria and Mainé-Soroa are facing a process of desertification due to climatic variations and human activities. In this area, one of the most visible forms of the phenomenon is the remobilization of sand dunes formerly fixed by vegetation. In their displacements, these sands threaten to bury the villages, the socio-economic infrastructures, the agro-pastoral spaces, but also and especially the circular lowlands which constitute real sources of agricultural productions and incomes for the populations. The oasis system of the Manga is a unique ecosystem that includes agricultural production potential and environmental resources like no other in this semi-arid environment. To help meet the challenge of the degradation of this oasian systems of south-eastern Niger, the “Commission Universitaire pour le Développement” of the French speaking Community of Belgium (CUD) has funded a first phase of a targeted inter-university program (PIC) entitled " Encroachment of circular lowlands of the South-East of Niger by aeolian supply: process, impacts and means of struggle" which opted for an interdisciplinary approach to find solutions to the problem of silting of oasian basins in south-eastern Niger. Following the evaluation of the first phase of the program, the need for a continuation phase was evident. This second phase funded by the Academy of Research and Higher Education (ARES) is entitled "Preservation of circular lowlands and their socio-economic role in southeastern Niger (PIC REC-GOURE-2)" and it aims at proposing sustainable management of these environments, notably by conserving and increasing the agricultural potential of the oasis basins, areas of lowlands with high agricultural value. This study illustrates the main results obtained through the interdisciplinary approach in the PIC in the Department of Gouré. © 2018 Geo-Eco-Trop. All rights reserved.
