Abstract :

This article deals with two recent German-speaking literary texts, Daniel Glattauer’s e-mail novel Gut gegen Nordwind (2006) and Andreas Neumeister's unclassifiable work Angela Davis löscht ihre Website (2002). While Glattauer’s text appears as a contemporary refashioning of the epistolary novel, Neumeister's covers its generical roots. The first one presents itself as the figurehead of the e-mail novel, a genre which seems to be already well codified on both the structural and the topical level, as well as regarding the bourgeois ideological marking of its characters and their lived experiences. The second text, in contrast, refuses any generic, topical, or sensical unity. It thereby tries to account for the constant and contradictory mediatic flow in the 21th century as well as for the reception behavior it implies, the so-called « disseminated continuous attention ». Both texts stand for two different modes of what Nünning and Rupp2 call the « medialisation » of literature under the influence of digital media. Glattauer can be ranked amongst the positivists who express their confidence in the capability of literature to grasp the experience of the digitalized world. Conversely, Neumeister tends to be pessimistic: by playing with gamification markers that reveal themselves as inefficient, he disappoints the readers' expectations and shows the failure of the of the printed literary text to become gamified. However, beyond their differences, both authors performatively perpetuate the printed book culture : by choosing this medium to discuss the digital world, they continue to affirm its predominance as an archiving and organizing as well as a legitimating authority within the discourse about (other types of) media.
