[fr] L'étude vise les fluctuations de la croyance aux "géants patagons" dans le Journal encyclopédique et l'Esprit des journaux. Un empirisme anglais sensible au merveilleux s'y oppose au scepticisme français appuyé sur Buffon, Corneille de Pauw et l'article "Patagons" de l'Encyclopédie. L'abbé Roubaud dénoncera en l'occurrence "une incrédulité aussi anti-philosophique que la crédulité". Si l'affrontement journalistique tend finalement à discréditer l'existence physique de tels "géants", il fait apparaître, au plan culture, l'avancée de l'ethnographie britannique, illustrée par les Essays on the History of Mankind in Rude and Cultivated Ages de James Dunbar (1780).

Commentary :
The study is devoted to the fluctuations of the belief in the "Patagonian giants" in the Journal encyclopédique and the Esprit des journaux. A British empiricism open to the wonderful is opposed to a French skepticism based upon Buffon, Corneille de Pauw and the article "Patagonians" of the Encyclopédie. The abbé Roubaud denounces here "a disbelief as anti-philosophical as credulity". If the controversy finally tends to discredit the physical existence of such "giants", it reveals, from a cultural point of view, the progress of British ethnography, illustrated by james Dunbar's Essays on the history of mankind in rude and cultivated ages (1780).
