[en] The study of arrow poisons is a vast subject, involving many different sciences, among them ethnology, botany, chemistry and pharmacology. Afetr an introduction and a critical study of the literature referring to arrow poisons from Cental Africa, the author has described the notes about herbarium samples kept in the Botanic Graden of Belgium at Meise. Then, he has stated his chemical study on well-identified poisoned arrows preserved in the Royal Museum of Central Africa at Tervuren. From all these data, the author has been able to plot a map showing the geographic distribution of the main poisons used in Zaïre ( Congo-RDC), Rwanda and Burundi. Finally , this publication also demonstrates the great benefit that poisons can provide to organic chemists and pharmacologists in the never-ending search for new and better drugs.
