[en] Magnesium plays an important role at different levels in the body. It is
absorbed essentially in the rumen. Numerous factors, such as an increase
in the ruminal concentration of potassium, interfere with the bioavailability
of magnesium in the body. There is no hormonal control of magnesium,
so prevention of hypomagnesaemia is by intake of magnesium supplementation
in the ration and management of risk factors. The different forms of
tetany are treated in the same manner, that is, by perfusion of the animal
and corrective supplementation for the at-risk animals on the farm.
