[en] This study is dealing with the choice of the size and the type of sampling units to be used in inventories of beech stands (Fagus sylvatica L.), located in the Southern part of Belgium. In most cases the stands are evenaged or unevenaged according to the places. We have considered 3 types of units : fixed circular plots (5 to 20 ares), circular plots including a fixed number of trees (6 to 15 trees) and circular plots including a minimum number of trees (from 15 to 20). From efficiency point of view, we conclude that dominant girth and top height estimations are the best ones when measuring the 2 biggest trees in a circular plot area of 5 ares, while mean girth and mean volume estimations are worth considering when based upon the ten nearest trees from the point sample. The concept of the minimum number of trees is valuable in case of estimating number of trees, basal area and volume per hectare. [fr] Le choix du type et de la dimension d'unités d'échantillonnage à utiliser en inventaires forestiers est étudié dans le cas particulier des hêtraies d'allure jardinée ou équienne du Sud de la Belgique. Trois types d'unités ont été considérées, à savoir la placette à surface prédéterminée (5 à 20 ares), la placette à nombre de bois fixés (6 à 15 bois), et la placette à nombre minimum de bois (15 à 20 bois). Pour les principales caractéristiques dendrométriques à estimer, nous avons recherché parmi les méthodes évoquées celles qui fournissaient l'efficacité relative maximale à temps de travail constant. En vue d'estimer des circonférences et des hauteurs dominantes, nous conseillerons la mesure des 2 plus gros bois dans une surface circulaire de 5 ares. L'estimation de la circonférence et du volume moyens reposera sur la mesure des 10 arbres les plus proches du point de sondage. Enfin, la placette à nombre minimum de 15 à 20 bois sera la plus efficace pour déterminer le nombre de bois, la surface terrière et le volume à l'hectare.
