Abstract :
[en] Poppo, the abbot at Stavelot-Malmedy died in the abbey of Marchiennes in Hainaut on 25 January 1048. The scene of the saint's death, which his hagiographer described in grand manner some ten years later, deserves to be examined closely, as indeed the staging of his funeral, this stepping onto the threshold of "rebirth" into eternal life and sainthood (dies natalis). The Vita Popponis follows the rules of the hagiographic genre, in which the monk's death is inevitably highlighted.
