[en] The discussion centres on general aspects of and developments within the agricultural sector both in Europe as a whole and in Belgium, and on its role, function and socioeconomic importance. Considered of major importance are the growing diversification and internationalization of the agricultural sector and the increasingly close relations between agriculture and the agroindustrial sector and development of the food industries. Emphasis is also placed on product quality, an aspect of increasing significance to producers and the process of agricultural development. Finally, the need for a multidisciplinary approach in agricultural research and development in the light of these current developments is highlighted.
