[en] For Oscar Wilde, Japanese Art represented an ideal form for depicting society, and a sensuous way of creating of an artistic ideal. His interest in Japan, which goes far beyond the fashion of Japanism, so popular in European artistic and literary circles at the end of the 19th Century, is linked with a congenial understanding of Taoism. In this way, Wilde’s approach was particularly advanced for his time, and constitutes an important contribution to comparitive art and thought.
